I will never say having lower thermal is a bad thing but I will absolutely say there is way to much stress on it. Normally this should not be a frequent occurrence but it will vary game by game. Like if the CPU and GPU where getting hit hard in a game, then maybe a loading screen comes up or you enter a small room where it causes the load to decrease which results in the temps going down and the clocks go back up, but then the loading finishes or you leave that room and it hits the chips hard again causing it to stutter as it adjusts and has those frequency drops. It is possible to get stuttering if the thermals were erratic. As for the GPU, Nvidia has had amazing thermal management for a long time in their mobile chips and dynamically adjusts the frequency if the temp gets above 87c. And to be completely honest while running a laptop CPU at 95c for long periods of time can seem like it may be too much, its perfectly fine and the chips were made to do this. However, these days CPUs manage themselves much better thermally and dynamically adjust the clock speed and don't have to do that anymore. This is a big reason why most manufacturers for years have set a cap in the BIOS to limit the temp to 95c so it would not hit that, but some manufactures let them go to 100c and would get that problem. The way the algorithm used to try and manage heat was pretty bad, dropping down in very small increments a few times before giving up and doing that hard throttle.

There was a huge issue just a few years back where if the CPU was hitting over 97c for a long period of time, the chip would "hard" thermal throttle down to 800Mhz and it would kill performance. But that being said, running the CPU and GPU near (not at) max is also not horrible as the parts were made with running hot in mind as they were going to be put in small inclosed poorly ventilated areas. Lower temps equal less wear and "can" potentially keep things running longer. Just ran it to double check the numbers as I could not remember off hand lol.Īs for heat in laptops, ya running anything at its coolest is the best for longevity. The fans themselves never kicked up any higher but the clock speed for the CPU is pretty low on this mode at 2.7Ghz and one of the reasons why the TimeSpy is so much lower, but the temps during a Cinebench R23 did start high at 95c as the clocks were at 4.1ghz but then they went to the 2.7ghz and never got the package above 72c and stayed in the mid to low 60's most of the time. Lol well, there are a lot of "schools of thought" so to speak regarding laptops and heat, and the situation has changed a bit over time.
